Dave's Deschutes Trip
Dave's
Notebook - Deschutes River Trip - Fall 2001
Avid
angler Dave K. headed up to Oregon in September, 2001. Fishing
with Rob Crandall of Action
Anglers, he and another angler landed 9 nice steelhead,
plus a handful of fat redside trout.

The
drift took place on a two-day trip, from Trout Creek to Maupin.
|
Unscheduled
releases from the dam upstream brought water levels up a foot
from previous weeks. Fish had moved from the known hot spots,
and the fishing was tricky.
|
Some of
the beautiful fall color found in the Deschutes River valley.
Weather was excellent (typical for this time of year). Fish
were caught throughout the day. Prime season on this river
is fall through December.

Though
a few fish were caught with floating line setups, most came
on sink-tip lines (10' type 6 was key in the higher water levels.)
Top three most effective patterns (size 4 - 6 for steelhead):
(1) Articlated Leech in Black, (2) Green Butted Skunk and (3)
"Vacum Cleaner" custom tied by Rob Crandall of Action
Anglers.
